Organisational Learning Strategy

Untapped potential in Learning and Development (L&D) is a lost opportunity in most organisations. Michelle aspires to unleash learning to engage people with their work and build adaptive, thriving organisations.  A key part of her work is to help organisations develop and implement a modern learning strategy aligned to business needs today and empowering people.

Examples include:

Qantas – Provided strategic guidance on a transformation program over a 16-month period to reshape Learning and Development across multiple airlines and functions in the Qantas group. Modernised learning approaches, improving effectiveness and efficiency without compromising safety and compliance.

Coca-Cola Amatil – Designed and implemented Technical Academy to create sustainable capability in core operating functions.  Introduced and sustained continuous workplace learning, creating a more connected, collaborative organisation.

Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN) – Drowning under a sea of demand for software training, SCHN called on Michelle. She helped them find ways to reduce the training burden using more sustainable approaches while protecting patient care. Nyrie Roos

Develop and implement a modern organisational learning strategy

Building L&D Mindset and Capability

Michelle modernised learning in Supply Chain at Coca-Cola Amatil, starting with the mindset and capability of the learning team.  She believes that the first step to transform learning in organisations is for learning professionals to shift their own mindset and adopt modern learning practices themselves.  Building the capability of learning professionals is a core element of her work.

Examples include:

Coca-Cola Amatil – In the spirit of fitting your own oxygen mask first, Michelle created a continuous learning environment in the learning team.  They adopted social and experimental learning practices to build their own skills and equip themselves to support others to learn in more self-directed ways.

The Learning and Performance Institute (LPI) – Led a global collaborative effort involving more than 50 leading practitioners and experts globally to refresh the LPI’s Learning and Development Capability Map in 2018.  This contemporary framework defines the competencies required by a modern L&D team to meet the needs of organisation’s today and equip them for the future.

National Australia Bank (NAB) – Using the LPI Capability Map, guided NAB to define the capability required by their learning team to successfully implement their modern organisational learning strategy.  Assessed current team capability and assisted NAB to create an action plan to build capability.

Social and Collaborative Learning

Social and collaborative learning is about people connecting with each other and interacting to share knowledge, solve problems and improve practices.  This approach is central to how Michelle learns and works. She coaches others to improve social learning skills and habits to accelerate their individual professional development.  She also helps organisations to use social and collaborative learning effectively.

Examples include:

Strategic Communities of Practice – Introduced Communities of Practice for strategic capabilities at Coca-Cola Amatil including supply planning, manufacturing and engineering.  Coached others, including business leaders and subject matter experts, to build and sustain effective communities.

Working Out Loud (WOL) Circles – An early proponent of WOL in Australia, Michelle has established Circles both inside organisations and across the learning profession.

Workshops and Courses – Michelle facilitates the Social and Collaborative Learning program offered by the Australian Institute of Training and Development.  She runs workshops on using social learning in organisations and can create bespoke programs to meet an organisation’s needs.
